The Mozambican Ministry of National Defense named on Tuesday three officials from the main opposition party, Renamo, to its leadership structure, following ongoing peace talks between the party and the Mozambican government.
They are General Officers Brigadier Xavier António, Comodore Inacio Luís Vaz and Brigadier Araújo Andeiro Maciacona, to serve temporarily as Director of the Department of Operations, Director of the Department of Military Information and Director of the Department of Communications, respectively, in the State -Most General of the Defense Forces of Mozambique, FADM.
According to a ministry press release seen by PanAfricanVisions, the appointments resulted from the consensus reached between the Mozambican president and Defense Force Commander-in-Chief, Filipe Nyusi, and the interim leader of Renamo, General Ossufo Momade, following the political dialogue to the achievement of effective peace, harmony, national reconciliation and the strengthening of democracy.
The nominations are part of Renamo’s demands that it be able to hand over to the government the list of all armed men of the party, in a process that should culminate in disarmament, demobilization and reintegration into the society of its military personnel.
Once the nominations phase has been completed in the FADM, another Renamo demands should be followed, namely the inclusion of other party officers in the leadership of Mozambican police, including in the secrete services, Serviços Informação e Segurança do Estado, SISE.
It is only after this phase that Renamo will proceed with the delivery of information on its armed forces, their location, the weapons in their possession and other military equipment that should be destroyed by the Mozambican State along with international military experts who assist the process.
