Minja Nkoulou épouse Mebe Ngo’o Bernadette, spouse to Cameroon’s former Minister of Defense, Edgard-Alain Mebe Ngo’o has now spend one night and counting at the Kondengui Maximum security prison in the nation’s capital Yaounde.
The wife of the erstwhile Minister who was sent to jail on embezzlement charges after appearing before the Special Criminal court on March 5, 2019, joined her husband yesterday March 11.
The Minister’s wife and their two sons on March 6, appeared before the Special Criminal Court in Yaounde to answer for their involvement in the alleged embezzlement case.
With the jailing of his wife, many are those who believe that the Minister’s children might soon join him in jail. This will be the first time in Cameroon that a former minister and his family are been jailed for embezzling state funds.
Former Minister Edgard who equally served as Transport Minister, and some close associates of his including; Mbangue Maxime, Lieutenant-colonel Mboutou Ghislain Joel, and Victor Menye, were transferred to Kondengui Central Prison after hours of questioning by the Special Criminal Court in Yaounde.
Minister Edgard was grilled for hours on charges of gross embezzlement of state funds which roundup to billions of FCFA during his mandate as the country’s defense minister.
Days after his arrest, security officials are said to have raided his home and carried away dozens of luxurious cars and over 3 billion Francs CFA in liquid cash.
Local media reports that Mebe Ngo’o faces charges in relation to an investigation opened against him one year ago. The former Defense Minister is accused of a series of overcharging of equipment intended to equip the Cameroonian army that was purchased from French arms supplier, MagForce.
The former Defense Minister and Transport Minister is under investigation for arms purchase deal dating back to 2010.
