A whopping sum of 3 billion CFA francs in cash was what we first reported to have been catered away from the residence of Cameroon’s jailed former Minister of Defense, Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo’o. However, recent court filings prove there was a way more.
Details as to the luxurious lifestyle of the disgraced former minister and his family continue to stun the public especially taxpayers in the country.
It is now reported that aside the liquid cash carried away by government security forces during last week’s raid, some 48 vehicles and 448 high-class suites stamped in the name of the Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo’o, was equally seized.
Another 20 VIP vehicles alleged to belong to a car rental company owned by Bernadette Mebe Ngo’o, who on March 11 joined her husband in jail, were also confiscated from their Odza residence in Yaounde. We gathered that prosecutors are equally going after his bank accounts and assets.
The Former Defense Minister who equally served as Transport Minister was tipped as the president’s favorite with political watchers opining that President Paul Biya was grooming him to take over as president of Cameroon.
But his detention which was followed by the arrest of his wife proves the popular saying in Cameroon that “Biya has no friends.”
Appearing before the Special Criminal Court on March Tuesday, March 5, 2019, alongside some close associates of his including; Mbangue Maxime, Lieutenant-colonel Mboutou Ghislain Joel, and Victor Menye, Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo’o was transferred to Kondengui Central Prison after hours of interrogation.
He was grilled for hours on charges of gross embezzlement of state funds which roundup to billions of FCFA during his mandate as the country’s defense minister.
Bernadette Mebe Ngo’o, wife of the erstwhile Minister joined her husband March 11 after her and their two sons were on March 6, summoned before the Special Criminal Court to answer for their involvement in the alleged embezzlement case.
With the jailing of his wife, many are those who believe that the Minister’s children might soon join him in jail.
Local media reports that Mebe Ngo’o faces charges in relation to an investigation opened against him one year ago. The former Defense Minister is accused of a series of overcharging of equipment intended to equip the Cameroonian army that was purchased from French arms supplier, MagForce dating back to 2010.
