Juba – the office of the president announced that president Kiir will start his revitalized peace dissemination tour to his homeland, Greater Bahr el Ghazal region next week.
This will be a first-major presidential tour since the five -years old conflict broke out in 2013, and after signing the revitalized peace deal on September 2018, aimed to restore stability in the restive East Africa country.
Mayiik Ayii Deng, Minister, Office of the President said president Salva Kiir’s peace tour will start on Tuesday 26 of February 2019 in Terekeka State and end in Lol State. The president will largely hold rallies in the state capital and population centers.
“By this tour, His Excellency, the president, has the objective to disseminate the revitalized agreement on the resolution of conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) and to invite the people of South Sudan to support the leadership and the parties in implementing this peace agreement,” Deng told journalists on Friday in Juba. “As the president has time and again mentioned to the public, his commitment to this peace agreement is irreversible. The president will therefore assure citizens along the way that peace has returned to the country and that war has officially ended.”
President Kiir, who hailed from Bahr el Ghazal will therefore ask citizens to embrace peace among themselves.
Deng further said the president will also listen to the people of South Sudan directly about the concerns, their needs, and their advice to the leadership.
“The president greatly values ordinary people’s views and so he will be taken to listen to his people and to have the first – hand information of their living conditions,” said Deng.
The ongoing conflict, has greatly affected the people of Upper Nile region than another region in South Sudan.
It was not clear what prompted president Kiir to close his homeland, but the president Kiir’s spokesperson, Ateny Wek Ateny walled it, saying they are ready for any critics from the public.
“In regards to the conflict that has been ongoing, has affected the whole country, is not only about Upper Nile region, so the president is beginning with Bahr el Ghazal region and later will go to other region, there is no bad feeling about that,” Ateny said.
Also, the president tour is to encourage citizens to participate in the national dialogue process, which is on-going and urge citizens to use opportunity to express their views about the future of this country.
“Specifically, the president will explore citizens to begin to heal their differences, end all forms of communal violence and consolidate local peace,” said Minister.
Other things, which president aims to assess in person, includes the economic pulses and infrastructures of the country.
“The president will assure the people of South Sudan that the government pursues peace because it plans to revive the economy and invest in critical transport and communications infrastructures,” Deng added.
A political violence between president Kiir and his former deputy Dr. Riek Machar, loyal forces, has killed nearly 400,000 people and displaced 4 million people from the homes, before it ruined a country’s economy.
With this revitalized peace deal, president Kiir will remain as the president for three -years of transitional government period, deputized by Dr. Machar and other four vice presidents until elections holds.
